An unlikely crewmember

Well met brother-mine, Galindra sent to Salith. I knew I’d find you. All I had to do was search for who was causing the greatest grief for the new, unwelcome batch of Earthers.

The copper-scaled dragon glided above the settlement in a wide arc, circling and gradually losing altitude. As she drew near to the village square again, Galindra angled her wings, letting the air resistance further slow her progress, and settled to a gentle landing, morphing into her human form.

“So, what trouble are you involved in now?” she said, striding forward.

Foyle put her pistol away, a broad smile on her face. “Actually, I believe he and his ragtag band of companions prevented an injustice from being done to these villagers.”

Salith hooked his thumb into his war belt and warily eyed Galindra. “Indeed, we did. While giving the unruly Earthers a taste of ForeSender justice, I may add, sister-mine.” He paused, his expression darkening. “Though I am not sure that I have fully forgiven you for taking Captain Naylor’s part against me.”

Galindra raised a placatory hand. “Peace, brother. You should know that he has now openly taken our side in opposing his new commander’s actions.” Seeing Salith’s puzzled mien, she described the abortive effort to negotiate with Colonel Jessop and their subsequent escape from the palace, aided by Naylor. Before he left, Mirchelius had asked that she find Salith and join forces with him to combat the attackers. Naylor, meanwhile, remained behind to help Barok organize a revolt, with the primary aim of retaking the portal.

“So, my sister, our uncle is off yet again, is he?” Salith chuckled, shaking his head. “He seldom stays put in one place for long. Hopefully, he will return with reinforcements. In the meantime, we must do all we can to disrupt the freshly arrived Earthers’ attempts to impose their will on the people of this kingdom.”

“Speaking of reinforcements,” Foyle said. She motioned to Gorajev. “Private, get back on board and comm the new alpha base. Call off any additional troops Patel requested. Notify them that we’re now onsite and the situation here is under control.”

Foyle turned to gaze at the pair of onworlder siblings. “I want to help you undermine the unlawful invasion of this planet. Which means you’ve now got a hover-tank at your disposal.” Her demeanor became rueful. “Though I’m down a crewmember, which’ll make operating the vehicle a bit of a challenge, especially in combat.”

Salith gave her a thoughtful look. “What you need is someone with unique abilities who enjoys learning new concepts and practices.”

“So long as they’re a quick study,” Foyle said. “Crewing a tank isn’t something you pick up in a day. Do you have a particular person in mind?”

“As it happens, I just might have the ideal replacement for you, Lieutenant.”

Foyle frowned, while Galindra arched an eyebrow and peered at her brother.

“All will soon be revealed,” Salith said, laughing and waving a hand in the air.

He turned as several figures entered the square. Some were Earth soldiers, disarmed and surrounded by warriors and villagers.
